Opening of Gurdwara Sahib Temple in Jalan Tokong Ular

MORE than 1,000 Sikh devotees from all over the country took part in a grand procession to mark the opening of thefour-storey Gurdwara Sahib Temple in Jalan Tokong Ular, Bayan Baru, Penang.

The Nagar Kirtan procession started from the old temple in Lorong Mahsuri on Thursday, featuring the Sri Darvesh Pipe Band from Kuala Lumpur, a convoy of Punjabi super bikers and members of the Sikh community.

The Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh Holy Book) was transported on a beautifully decorated carriage and was then carried into the prayer hall at the temple by the chief priest.

“It’s customary to hold this ceremony before the opening of a Gurdwara Sahib Temple,” said Gurdwara Sahib Bayan Baru building fundraising committee chairman Manjit Singh.

The procession was part of a four-day celebration held to mark the official opening of the new temple tomorrow.

During the 45-minute procession starting at 8pm, traffic policemen were present to ensure everything went smoothly along the Bayan Baru main road.

The Balak Kirtan (hymns and prayers by children) was held yesterday followed by a screening of a Sikh religious movie while the Akhand Path (continuous recital of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji), which started on 9am on Friday, will continue until tomorrow morning.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will launch the new building tomorrow.
